What is core aeration and what does it do? Core aeration is a mechanical process that actually opens up the surface of the lawn to expose 4 times the surface area with out destroying the turf grass. This allows fertilizer, water and oxygen to get to the roots where healthy grass originates. Our core aerator is a machine with hollow tines that penetrate the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches and actually pulls a plug of soil out and throws it on the surface of the lawn. The tines are spaced 3 to 4 inches apart and do a good job of pulling the plugs out on moderately moist lawns. Aeration with a core aerator only needs to be done once a year.

 

Aerating is a great way to reduce thatch, loosen up compacted soils and make it easier for water and nutrients to reach the roots of your turf. Even with the best care, lawns can thin out and lose color due to excessive thatch buildup, too much foot traffic or pet traffic through specific areas that create hard or compacted soils, or periods of high temperature, high humidity, or drought. Aeration followed by overseeding is recognized by turf experts as the best treatment to control thatch, help reduce compacted areas, fill in bare spots and revitalize growth.
